Meals were quite pricey for a cafeteria but the museum is free, balancing it out a bit. I had food from the woodlands and coastlines menu and it didn’t disappoint. Fresh, whole foods with earthy flavors. The mini waterfall outside makes a for a great view by the window.

This is a cafeteria style restaurant with different stations serving native foods from different regions of the country. You can order all from one area, or pick and choose dishes from different regions. There are plenty of vegetarian options. Pick up your tray on entering, chose your foods, grab desserts and snacks from a central counter, pay, and then get utensils and napkins on your way to sit down. There is plenty of seating, and some seats look out on the water feature at the front of the museum. The staff were friendly (one server gently reprimanded my daughter for choosing all rice based dishes. She reminded me of my mom, I had to laugh). The food was all very good. The manoomin cake with smoked salmon, and the wild rice salad were our favorites. The hibiscus agua fresca (flor de jamaica), normally a favorite, was the only miss. It was too sweet and tasted like Kool-Aid, with no trace of tart hibiscus flavor.

I heard amazing things about it the food at this museum and knew I couldn’t leave DC without it trying it for myself. When I arrived, I was immediately greeted by the scents wafting from the food court. I ordered the Sweet Ginger Peach Fry Bread and the Potlatch-spiced Idaho steelhead trout with a side of hazelnut honey-roasted butternut squash salad. The servings were generous and filling. I was blown away by how amazing the food tasted. The flavors were perfect, and the fish well cooked. I enthusiastically recommend this as one of the best, if not the best, museum restaurants that I have ever had. It is pretty expensive though, particularly if ordering more than one dish or for more than one person.

I really liked the cafe, authentic Native Americans unusual and delicious dishes that are worth trying. The cafe is located right in the museum, you can combine a visit to the museum and the cafe. There are tables with a view of a small artificial waterfall outside the window, very beautiful. I highly recommend visiting this cafe.

Wonderful 1st time experience eating lunch at Mitsitam Cafe in the Native American museum. They have endless food choices to satisfy anyone - children, adults, meat/fish eaters, vegetarians, and probably vegans too! I chose the Idaho Steelhead Trout and two sides; a tasty squash and greens cold salad and a fava bean and peas dish, both nicely seasoned with other items. As you can see I the photo I couldn’t wait to taste the trout before taking a picture! Would highly recommend if in the area at any of the nearby museums or Botanic Garden. Beautiful waterfalls out the window and plenty of open seating. The location to our government sites is convenient.

I always love coming here. This time in had the fry bread taco. Always good, and filling. The peach fry bread is also really tasty. I wish they had more Indigenous drinks like cedar and sumac tea or more North Eastern Nation dishes. I still love the offerings they have.

One of the best dining options on the mall. Especially for those visiting. Seasonal and interesting menu options that are not easy to find elsewhere. Very efficiently run, and quick food options. The prices really have ballooned in the last few years, but I guess it’s the same everywhere, especially for quality food made from scratch. On the most recent visit, I ordered a lamb stew, a tostada, and a sweet fried bread dessert with a berry sauce and walnuts.

BEST MUSEUM FOOD EVER!!! Beyond impressed by Mitsitam. There are unique food options inspired by native foods like the chicken tostada and the fry breads. The rice is incredible and all the food is vibrant and flavorful. Service is cafeteria style and easy to navigate. Seating area is beautiful and there is plenty of room. This is truly the best museum food and if you’re visiting Smithsonians 100% come here for lunch.
